PC Altoona Yards, 1973 |
| Description: |
Hazy. Here is an original telephoto view that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1973. Shown here (L to R) are some of what used to be Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Car Shops, the Penn Central's two-track mainline through Altoona, as well as several freight trains awaiting crews and motive power to pull them up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Stopped and waiting permission to proceed is a westbound merchandise freight train, headed by PC engine #6076 ~ an SD40 built for the PRR in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. Photo taken from the 4th Street Footbridge. |
