CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-2 2912
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-2 2912
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-2 2912 at an unknown location on an unknown date, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Once upon a time you could purchase steam locomotive prints from a gentleman named Herbert L. Broadbelt. This was one of those photos, an unusual action photo in the Baldwin Locomotive Works negative collection (note the negative number in the lower right). It was undated and no location was noted. I roughed in Denver as the location because it looks like a major terminal, but does not look like Chicago. It could be Galesburg, Burlington, Omaha, or Kansas City, I don't know. Leave a comment if you know better. The date is also roughed in based on the build date (1910, c/n 34589), all steel cars pictured, a photo in the book, Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route, which shows this locomotive in 1933 with a different (Sunbeam, I believe) headlight in commuter service. Number 2912 was not rebuilt, but was retired in June 1935. It was one of fifty S-2's built by Baldwin for the CB&Q, assigned road numbers 2900-2949.

CB&Q 2-8-0 537
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-0 537
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad narrow gauge 2-8-0 537 at Denver, Colorado on June 11, 1934, photograph by Richard B. Jackson, print from Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 537 was built by Baldwin in April 1896 as Deadwood Central 5 (c/n 14792), renumbered to Burlington & Missouri River 496 in 1901, becoming CB&Q 537 in 1906. In March 1930, the DC was abandon, and the 537 was converted from oil to coal at the Denver Shops (it had been built as a coal-burner, but was converted to burn oil in 1910) and leased to the Colorado & Southern for use on the South Park lines until that line was abandon in April 1937. The tender was used by the scrapper as a water supply for the camp cars assigned in tearing up the South Park. It was reunited with the locomotive on temporary tracks at Denver pending a decision on the locomotive to attend the New York World's Fair, but C&S 9 went instead. The locomotive was stored, then shipped (locomotive and tender on separate flat cars) to the Q's Eola, Illinois Reclamation Plant and scrapped on August 26, 1939.

Description:  Built by Rhode Island in 1887 as Union Pacific, Denver & Gulf #261, it landed on the Colorado & Southern roster when CS took over the UPDG in 1899. The loco had an unusual modification. A tall pipe led from the rhomboid spark-arresting cap on the stack itself down to the trackbed. It turns out that the stack is a patented apparatus is called the Ridgway Stack. The purpose was to keep any stray cinders from setting fire to the highly combustible right of way. Specs - D-4-c class, 37" drivers, modest 150 psi boiler pressure, 16x18" cylinders, light engine weight of 71,030 lb, small tractive effort of 21,172 lb. All in the class were scrapped in the 1920's except #58 which lasted unti April of 1939. Harold Vollrath photo

DSL 2-6-6-0 #209 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Title:  DSL 2-6-6-0 #209 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Description:  Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1910, this articulated Mallet was originally built as a 0-6-6-0 configuration for the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific RR but this website doesn't offer that rare configuration for Alco. A leading truck was added in 1912 along with mechanical stokers by the now renamed Denver & Salt Lake RR. Specifics - Class 76 (later L-77), 55" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 21x32" high pressure cylinders, 33.5x32 low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 362,000 lb, tractive effort of 70,456 lb. The class was purchased by the Denver & Rio Grande Western where they served until retirement in the late 1940's-early 1950's. Unknown photographer.

DSL 2-6-6-0 #215 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Title:  DSL 2-6-6-0 #215 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Description:  Here is another Alco-Schenectady built 2-6-6-0 Mallet configuration (although this website does not have that option for Alco's). Drury (1993) says that these locomotives were the beneficiaries of two updates to the Mallet design the railroad was already operating -- a leading truck to make it a better road engine and a mechanical stoker. They apparently served their purpose well because all but one went to the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1947, from which they retired a few years later (1949-1951) as 3370-3375. Specifics - Class 210 (L-77), 55" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 21x32" high pressure cylinders, 33.5x32 low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 361,000 lb, tractive effort of 70,456 lb. Unknown photographer and date is approximate.
